1. Please tell us about your role and what it entails on a day-to-day basis

As a Cost Accountant, my major daily responsibilities are:

To monitor inventory movements at different locations through productions, sales, and transfers versus balance sheet balances for specific periods to avoid inventory losses through spillages, negligence, wastages, theft, and depletion.

To monitor the different COGs lines for proper costing of finished products at the various production sites. These are important for the monthly cost production reports.

Make available the required final products for sale on a dispatch day, among others.

Timely booking of purchase orders for inventory and non-inventory items and the respective bills for what is received.

2. Tell us a bit about your journey with Uzima from the time you started to date

Being grateful is an understatement. Starting as a Trainee Costing, through to a Junior Cost Accountant and currently as a Cost Accountant – (Supervisor Costing) has been a tremendous journey in my career path.

3. What drew you to work here?

The fact that Uzima Chicken Uganda is an entity directed to social impact, I would always have a reason to report every day to my designated workplace.

4. What do you enjoy the most about working with Uzima?

A clear mission. To make smallholder farmers healthier and wealthier per day by 2025 and in a state like Uganda with agriculture as the backbone, I always enjoy the sense of belonging.

5. Can you share a moment/ project in your Uzima Career you are proud of?

The best moment has been to have Costing Interns learn from what I already know. One of my greatest passions and interests is to pass on knowledge and skills to others. I believe it is one way to solve problems quickly.

6. Can you share a skill/hobby you have that people might not know?

Hardware and Software Computing skills with certificates from the School of Computing and Information Sciences – Makerere University. These were always gunned through my long vacation periods. I can offer front desk IT support.

7. Interesting! So what pushed you to pursue a career in accounting instead of software engineering/IT?

I would say circumstances, as I had no choice because my parents wanted me to do a three-year course and not four!

But as I grew through the Accounting & Finance field, I got to pick even more interest since it is an all-around field; applicable in all kinds of business sectors including Software Engineering/Computer Science. I now believe I was made for Accounting and Finance and look forward to continuing to drive our social Impact as Uzima Chicken Uganda and Hatch Africa as a whole.

8. What advice would you give to people starting out in a career like yours?

Commitment and allowing time for growth. Career growth takes effort and time to dig deeper in a given field. But just long enough not forever.
