Meet Phiona Nakabugo, working as a Business Development Associate at Uzima Chicken Ltd in Uganda. She also serves as President of the Rotaract Club in Bulindo.

1. When was the first time you heard of Uzima? How did you join Uzima?

I first heard about Uzima in 2021, I joined the company through a friend who reached

out and interested me in an internship opportunity. After our conversation, about the work the organisation was doing with Smallholder farmers, I was inspired to be part of the team.

2. What part of your job gets you excited the most each morning?

Having cross-functional collaboration, working with various teams (Sales, Operations, Finance, Talent & Admin) to drive business growth.

The youthful workforce creates a dynamic, vibrant work environment which creates excitement as well.

3. Walk us through your journey with Uzima from the time you started to date

I joined Uzima as a Customer Insights intern in 2021 to support a radio campaign at the time. After the campaign, I was retained to work as a Sales Support Officer, majorly supporting the sales team on their reporting. 6 months later, I was then promoted to a Customer Insights Associate collecting customer feedback and sharing insights with the leadership team.

This year, I transitioned to another role within the team as a Business Development
Associate supporting sales enablement projects, and key marketing initiatives among other responsibilities.

I appreciate that Uzima has offered me opportunities for professional growth, mentorship and leadership development.

4. You have had quite a journey at Uzima, what do you think has enabled you to keep growing and stay challenged?

I have been able to embrace stretch assignments, this has kept me motivated to do more and has helped me prove my commitment to professional growth. Also, being open minded has enabled me to understand that failure is a learning process.

5. You are a trained social worker, what aspects of your social work training do you find most impactful/useful in your job?

Effective communication, I can convey information to clients, partners and colleagues clearly and concisely. Poor communication leads to confusion and misunderstanding that can ultimately lead to disaster.

6. Can you share a moment/ project in your Uzima Career you are proud of?

I had the privilege of spearheading the coordination of all resources that enabled us to successfully participate in the 2024 Harvest Money Exhibition which is hosted annually at Kololo grounds. This was an opportunity that exposed me first-hand to public speaking, and budgeting. I also learnt that with teamwork, tasks are easier. I am glad that we were able to reach out to over 300+ people introducing them to our Uzima birds.

7. Can you share a skill/hobby you have that people might not know?

I love singing, it reduces anxiety and depression, revives a good mood & stimulates general psychological well-being.

8. Can you share a bit about your involvement with Rotary and why you think it’s important for staff to find fulfilling things to do outside their 9 to 5 job?

Rotary is an international service organization that brings together business and
professional leaders with a purpose of providing humanitarian services around the world.

Rotary has service programs that address concerns such as Illiteracy, maternal & child healthcare, disease prevention and treatment (Medical Camps) and saving the environment through planting trees. As a social worker I saw this as an opportunity, and to be a part of this movement brings me joy.

Exploring fulfilling activities outside formal work helps maintain a healthy work-life balance. Also pursuing personal interests/engaging in enjoyable activities reduces stress and can lead to new networking opportunities.
